How Do Circumcision Centers Work? A Peek Inside Our Circumcision Clinic

Finding an adult circumcision center isn’t always easy—especially as an adult. Many adults are curious about circumcision but are not sure about where to begin, and when they look into it they find most clinics specialize in children primarily.

So, what do you do?

While circumcision is typically performed on newborn baby boys, it can be done at any age. And thankfully, there are circumcision clinics like ours that can perform adult circumcisions.

There are several reasons why men choose to get circumcised. In some cultures, it is seen as a rite of passage or a religious ceremony. In other cases, it may be recommended for medical reasons. For others, it’s a choice they make for aesthetic or personal reasons.

If you are considering circumcision, you may be wondering how a circumcision clinic works. So today, we’re sharing a little bit of what happens behind the scenes.

Circumcision Process

In the United States, circumcision does not require a referral from a doctor. Instead, you can book an appointment directly with a circumcision clinic to make it easy and save you time and money.

Generally, there are 4 steps involved in the circumcision process:

Step 1: Schedule a Consultation

The first step is to schedule a consultation with a circumcision provider. During this consultation, you will discuss your reasons for wanting circumcision and ask any questions you may have about the procedure. You will also have to fill out paperwork that includes your personal information and medical history.

Step 2: The Procedure

If you decide to move forward with the procedure after your consultation, you will then have to schedule a time slot. The circumcision procedure itself only takes about 30 minutes. First, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area, and then our doctor will remove the foreskin. Recovery time varies from person to person, but most men can return to their normal activities within a few days.

Step 3: Recovery

After circumcision, it’s essential to keep the area clean and dry at all times. You will likely be given instructions on how to care for the wound. It is normal to experience some discomfort and swelling after the procedure.

Step 4: Follow-Up Appointments

We recommend that all men who get circumcised at our center come in for follow-up appointments so that we can check on their healing progress and make sure there are no complications. These appointments are typically scheduled 1 week, 1 month, and 6 months after your initial procedure.

What are the Benefits of Circumcision?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the overall benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. The AAP says that circumcision has potential health benefits and advantages, including:

  • Easier hygiene maintenance
  • Decreased risk of urinary tract infections
  • Reduced risk of sexually transmitted diseases
  • Prevention of phimosis (Difficulty retracting the foreskin)
  • Prevention of paraphimosis (Inability to return the foreskin to its original position)

The AAP also says that there are ,no significant disadvantages to circumcision. Complications from circumcision are rare but can include bleeding and infection. You can further minimize these risks by choosing an experienced doctor and carefully following postoperative instructions.

What are the Risks of Not Being Circumcised?

Leaving the foreskin intact can increase the risk of certain problems, such as:

  • Various infections & sexual diseases
  • Phimosis (difficulty retracting the foreskin)
  • Paraphimosis (inability to return the foreskin to its original position)
  • Balanitis (inflammation of the glans)
  • Balanoposthitis (inflammation of both the glans and foreskin)
  • UTI (urinary tract infection)
  • Penile Cancer

You can often treat these conditions with self-care or medical intervention. In some cases, however, doctors may recommend circumcision to resolve recurrent problems or improve quality of life.

Should I Get Circumcised?

There are many factors to consider before making a decision, such as personal preferences, religious beliefs, cultural influences, and potential medical benefits and risks.
